Frequently Asked Questions
Answers for boat builders, marine OEMs, and dealers.
-
For EPA purposes, no notification is required. Big Dog Marine carbon canisters and deck fills come with a component Certificate of Conformity (COC) that fully covers the boat builder — no separate EPA contact needed. For CARB, builders will need to update their application form to include Big Dog Marine's Executive Order numbers (EO RM-20-001 and RM-20-0002). That's a straightforward administrative update, not a re-certification process.
-
Yes. Big Dog Marine carbon canisters are CARB approved for sale in California under Executive Orders RM-20-001 and RM-20-0002. If you're building vessels for the California market, our components are fully compliant.
-
Our canisters are not an ABYC-certified component, but they are designed and validated to meet every performance requirement outlined in ABYC C-2 for Carbon Canisters for Marine Applications. We hold ourselves to the strictest performance standards — the certification designation is the only thing our canisters don't carry.
-
Yes — and it's straightforward. Our canisters are a plug-and-play swap with all major canister systems. We use high-performance, industry-standard hose barb sizes and standard attachment brackets, so integration into your existing fuel system requires no special modifications.
-
Yes, but this is not a direct swap. Switching from a pressure relief system to a carbon canister system requires some additional component changes — specifically, a simplified deck fill and an anti-siphon valve. Our team is happy to walk you through exactly what's needed for your specific system configuration.
-
No approval is required. All you need to do is install per our instruction sheets. That said, our subject matter expert is available to help with system design questions and guidance on protecting carbon media from liquid water or fuel ingestion — both of which can affect canister performance. We're happy to help, but it's not a required step.
-
Yes. Heat-shielded versions are available for installations in or near engine compartments where elevated temperatures are a concern. If you're specifying components for a build with limited separation between the canister mounting location and a heat source, the heat shield series is the right choice. Reference the part number table on the product page to identify the correct heat shield configuration for your tank size and mounting orientation.
-
Our standard lead time is 4–6 weeks, but most orders can be fulfilled sooner. If you have an urgent requirement, contact our team—we’ll do our best to help keep your production on schedule.
-
Start with the part number on your existing component — it will be printed or stamped directly on the canister or deck fill. Use that number to cross-reference against our part number tables on the product pages. If you're not sure which part you need, email us at orders@bigdogmarine.com with a photo of your existing component and we'll point you in the right direction. Individual replacement parts can be ordered directly through our website with no account required.
